Kourtney Kardashian's ex, Scott Disick, blasts her PDA with Travis Barker in alleged DMs to another past beau - Fox News

Scott Disick allegedly slid into the DMs of Kourtney Kardashian’s ex-boyfriend, Younes Bendjima, in an attempt to join forces against the reality star who has been jet-setting around the world with Travis Barker -- but Bendjima didn’t exactly go for the buddy routine.

Referencing the wildly public display of affection the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star, 42, and Blink-182 drummer, 45, have been exchanging during their recent vacation to Italy, Disick, 38, allegedly appeared to turn to Bendjima for support but the model, 28, didn’t take the bait and ended up putting Disick on blast afterward.

"Yo is this chick ok!???? Broooo like what is this. In the middle of Italy," Disick allegedly wrote to Bendjima, who shared the alleged direct message to his Instagram Stories on Monday. The message was sent alongside a photo of Kardashian – who is the mother of Disick’s three children – straddling Barker on a boat.

"Doesn’t matter to me as long as she’s happy," Bendjima appeared to write back, adding, "PS: i aint your bro."

Bendjima, who dated the Poosh founder from 2016 until their split in 2018, also wrote over the screenshot of the alleged direct message, stating: "keep the same energy you had about me publicly, privately."

In a follow-up slide on his Instagram Story, Bendjima wrote, "couldn’t miss this one. He been playing around for too long, tired [sic] to stay quiet and be the nice guy."

Disick has yet to publicly respond to Bendjima, who many believed had also shaded his ex in a shared-then-deleted Instagram Story post back in April.

"Shamelessness has become so normal in today’s society that modesty has become strange," Bendjima posted at the time in the wake of Kardashian sharing a photo of herself donning a thong bikini and kissing Barker.

Barker shares daughter, Alabama, 15, and son, Landon, 17, with his ex-wife Shanna Moakler, 46. They split in 2008 after four years of marriage.

A rep for Disick did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment.

KISS postpones shows after Gene Simmons tests positive for COVID amid Paul Stanley's recovery - Yahoo Entertainment

Five days after postponing a show because member Paul Stanley had tested positive for the coronavirus, the band KISS has announced that Gene Simmons also has COVID. They're rescheduling four additional dates in the Midwest as a result.

"While Paul Stanley recently tweeted that he had recovered from COVID, Gene Simmons has now tested positive and is experiencing mild symptoms," a post on the rockers' official Twitter account read. "The band and crew will remain at home and isolate for the next 10 days and doctors have indicated the tour should be able to resume on September 9th at Five Point Amphitheatre in Irvine, CA." Ticketholders will be contacted, according to the announcement.

Simmons, who had initially tested negative after Stanley fell ill, on Friday told TMZ that everyone on the group's current End of the Road tour was tested after the news about their bandmate. Everyone had already been vaccinated.

Stanley said in his own statement on Aug. 30 that, although his symptoms were "mild," the virus "kicked my ass."

Just this month, Simmons spoke to Yahoo Entertainment about his views on masks and vaccines.

"But how sad is it that it's 'political'?" he said. "I don't care what party you're affiliated with, or whether you think the election was stolen or not, which is all delusional. The earth is not flat. And this is really serious stuff. There are people dying because governors —[Ron] DeSantis, cough, in Florida — are really hurting people by not mandating masks."

He advocated for laws requiring the vaccine.

"Let's be honest: You can't drive through a red light. You don't have that freedom. You must wear a seatbelt," Simmons said. "You're not allowed to stand up in a movie theater and yell 'fire' just because you want to — that's incitement to riot. So these idiots who are complaining about getting COVID shots or not wearing masks are misunderstanding. They do not have the right to hurt other people. And this is a pandemic and it's very catchy potentially and you could be infecting other people, which is why I'm a firm believer that this should be a law."

KISS is far from the only artist to postpone or cancel shows in the wake of the pandemic. BTS, Garth Brooks, Stevie Nicks, Nine Inch Nails and others have done the same.

Gene Simmons tests positive for COVID-19, Kiss tour postponed - New York Post

Another member of the legendary rock group Kiss has tested positive for COVID-19.

Following a Friday announcement that Paul Stanley tested positive for the virus — and that the band was canceling the evening’s show as a result — Gene Simmons has also tested positive, and the group will be postponing multiple upcoming shows as a result.

“Kiss will postpone their next four tour dates. While Paul Stanley recently tweeted that he has recovered from COVID, Gene Simmons has now tested positive and is experiencing mild symptoms,” Kiss tweeted Tuesday. “The band and crew will remain at home and isolate for the next 10 days and doctors have indicated the tour should be able to resume on September 9th at FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine, CA.”

The Post has reached out to reps for Simmons for comment.

Purchased tickets for their “End of the Road” farewell tour will be honored at the new dates once they are announced, the post added. The now postponed shows were set to take place in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin. The show canceled upon Stanley’s diagnosis was in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania.

In announcing the rockers’ breakthrough cases, Kiss has also revealed that the entire band and touring crew are fully vaccinated.

Members of Kiss “and their crew have operated in a bubble independently to safeguard everyone as much as possible at each show and in between shows,” the band wrote in a statement following Stanley’s diagnosis. “The tour also has a COVID safety protocol officer on staff full-time that is ensuring everyone is closely following all CDC guidelines.”

Stanley shared his experience with the virus on Twitter

“My COVID symptoms were MILD compared to many others and let me tell you … It kicked my ass,” he wrote Monday. “It’s over now.”

Kourtney Kardashian shares Bible verse amid Scott Disick, Travis Barker drama - Page Six

Taking the holy road.

Kourtney Kardashian is turning to the Bible after Scott Disick allegedly told another one of her ex-boyfriends that her PDA with Travis Barker was too much.

The “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star, 42, tweeted Tuesday, “John 15:7. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask anything you wish, and it will be done for you.”

Kardashian’s post came just hours after Younes Bendjima, whom she dated from 2016 to 2018, leaked an alleged DM from Disick, who apparently wanted to vent about their mutual ex’s new relationship.

“Yo is this chick ok!???? Broooo like what is this. In the middle of Italy,” the “Flip It Like Disick” star, 38, purportedly wrote to Bendjima, 28, alongside a paparazzi photo of Kardashian straddling Barker, 45, on a boat in Italy.

“Doesn’t matter to me as long as she’s happy,” Bendjima responded. “PS: i aint your bro.”

He captioned the screenshot, “keep the same energy you had about me publicly, privately.”

Barker, for his part, seemed unbothered by the alleged DMs. The Blink-182 drummer, 45, shared a meme to his Instagram Story Tuesday that showed Ray Liotta laughing in “Goodfellas.” He didn’t bother to caption the post, but fans took it as his response.

Kardashian and Disick’s on-again, off-again relationship began in 2006 and ended in 2015. They share three children: Mason, 11, Penelope, 9, and Reign, 6.

Kardashian and Barker went public with their romance in January, just over two years after her split from Bendjima.

While Disick is seemingly salty about Barker now, he gave Kardashian his blessing to date the musician in June during the “KUWTK” reunion.

“I think if you really love somebody right, you want them to be happy no matter what,” Disick told Andy Cohen at the time. “So, I do give her a blessing to be happy.”

Gene Simmons Tests Positive for Covid-19, Kiss Postpone More Tour Dates - Rolling Stone

Kiss have postponed the next four dates on their North American tour after Gene Simmons tested positive for Covid-19.

In a statement shared on Twitter, the band said Simmons is “experiencing mild symptoms” and that the band and crew “will remain at home and isolate for the next 10 days.” They added that “doctors have indicated the tour should be bale to resume on September 9th at FivePoint Amphiteatre in Irvine, California.”

The four postponed dates — September 1st in Clarkston, Michigan; September 2nd in Dayton, Ohio; September 4th in Tinley Park, Illinois; and September 5th in Milwaukee, Wisconsin — will be rescheduled and previously purchased tickets will be honored at the new dates. An updated itinerary will be announced soon, and more information will be emailed to ticket holders directly.

Simmons’ positive Covid test comes just days after singer Paul Stanley also caught the virus, forcing the band to postpone shows in Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia. At the time, Kiss said in a statement that their entire band and crew are “fully vaccinated,” and that everyone has “operated in a bubble independently to safeguard everyone as much as possible at each show and in between shows.”

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Simmons urged fans to get vaccinated against Covid-19, saying, “I would highly recommend for everybody to get two Pfizer or Moderna shots, please — for the rest of us. Even if you believe the Earth is flat, it’s not.”

KISS's GENE SIMMONS Tests Positive For COVID-19; Four More Concerts Postponed

Gene Simmons has tested positive for COVID-19.

The KISS bassist/vocalist's diagnosis comes less than a week after his bandmate Paul Stanley revealed that he had also contracted the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, forcing the postponement of three shows on the group's "End Of The Road" farewell tour.

Earlier today (Tuesday, August 31), KISS released the following statement: "KISS will postpone their next four tour dates. While Paul Stanley recently tweeted that he has recovered from COVID, Gene Simmons has now tested positive and is experiencing mild symptoms. The band and crew will remain at home and isolate for the next 10 days and doctors have indicated the tour should be able to resume on September 9th at FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine, CA. All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates once announced. More information will be emailed to ticketholders directly."

Postponed shows:

Aug. 26 - Burgettstown, PA @ The Pavilion at Star Lake
Aug. 28 - Raleigh, NC @ Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek
Aug. 29 - Atlanta, GA @ Cellairis Amphitheatre at Lakewood
Sep. 01 - Clarkston, MI @ DTE Energy Music Theatre
Sep. 02 - Dayton, OH @ Wright State University Nutter Center
Sep. 04 - Tinley Park, IL @ Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre
Sep. 05 - Milwaukee, WI @ American Family Insurance Amphitheater - Summerfest Grounds

When Stanley first tested positive last Thursday, KISS said the whole band and the crew members who are traveling with them on the tour are fully vaccinated.

Members of KISS "and their crew have operated in a bubble independently to safeguard everyone as much as possible at each show and in between shows," the band wrote in the statement.

"The tour also has a COVID safety protocol officer on staff full-time that is ensuring everyone is closely following all CDC guidelines," the statement continued.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Simmons urged fans to get vaccinated against COVID-19, saying: "I would highly recommend for everybody to get two Pfizer or Moderna shots, please — for the rest of us. Even if you believe the Earth is flat, it's not."

KISS kicked off the summer 2021 leg of its "End Of The Road" farewell tour on August 18 at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts. The concert marked the band's first full-length live appearance in front of an audience since March 2020.

KISS's farewell trek was launched in January 2019 and was originally scheduled to conclude on July 17, 2021 in New York City but is now expected to last well into 2022.

KISS's current lineup consists of original members Stanley and Simmons, alongside later band additions, guitarist Tommy Thayer (since 2002) and drummer Eric Singer (on and off since 1991).

Formed in 1973 by Stanley, Simmons, Peter Criss (drums) and Ace Frehley (guitar), KISS staged its first "farewell" tour in 2000, the last to feature the group's original lineup.

Mike Richards Fired as Executive Producer of ‘Jeopardy!’ and ‘Wheel of Fortune’ - Variety

Sony has fired Mike Richards as the executive producer of “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune.” Michael Davies, the “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” executive producer whose Embassy Row shingle is based at Sony, will take over production duties in the interim.

The news was announced by Suzanne Prete, executive vice president, business and strategy, “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy!” in a memo to staff. Prete said she would be also be taking a more active day-to-day role on the shows moving forward.

Richards’ exit comes a little more than a week after he was forced to step down as “Jeopardy!” host, just nine days after he was tapped to succeed the legendary Alex Trebek as the face of the beloved quiz show.

“We had hoped that when Mike stepped down from the host position at ‘Jeopardy!’ it would have minimized the disruption and internal difficulties we have all experienced these last few weeks,” Prete said in her note. “That clearly has not happened.”

Richards gave up the job as host after ugly statements that he had made on an eight-year-old podcast series resurface, and that followed concerns over the host selection process — with whispers that Richards, as host, was able to calibrate the search to replace Trebek in his favor. And it also came following the unearthing of discrimination lawsuits that multiple models working on “Price Is Right,” which he had produced at the time, filed in 2010 and 2011.

After Richards gave up the host chair, Sony voiced support for him remaining in his role as executive producer. “Mike has been with us for the last two years and has led the ‘Jeopardy!’ team through the most challenging time the show has ever experienced. It is our hope that as EP he will continue to do so with professionalism and respect,” Sony said at the time.

But morale was said to be low on both shows, even before the recent hosting debacle, and clearly the events of the past few weeks had made things untenable on the sets of both shows — but particularly “Jeopardy.” (According to one insider, “Wheel of Fortune” staffers had felt completely in the dark in recent weeks as to what was happening and who was running the ship.)

The five episodes that Richards shot in his first and only day as “Jeopardy!” permanent host were scheduled to start off the new season on Sept. 13; it’s unclear if that will change now that he is also no longer EP.

Richards took over as executive producer on both “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy!” in 2020, after the exit of longtime executive producer Harry Friedman, who announced in August 2019 that he would be stepping down when his contract expired. Friedman had run “Wheel of Fortune” since 1995 and “Jeopardy!” since 1997.

The succession plan came into view in 2019, when Richards stepped down from his roles as executive producer of both “The Price Is Right” and “Let’s Make a Deal” and signing a multi-year overall deal with Sony Pictures Television. Besides being a producer, Richards has hosted several shows over the years including “Beauty and the Geek,” “Divided” and “The Pyramid.”

Richards took over during “Jeopardy!” during a difficult period for the show, given Trebek’s illness and death, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on producing a studio-based show. He helped oversee the initial process in replacing Trebek, but made a point to step down as part of the process after throwing his hat in the ring for the job.

Richards was named permanent host on Aug. 11, six days after Variety reported he was in advanced negotiations for the coveted job. Simultaneously, previous guest host Mayim Bialik was named the host of “Jeopardy!” primetime specials and a spinoff series; she was later tapped to again fill in as guest host on the daytime “Jeopardy!” following Richards’ ouster as host; a round of other guest hosts are expected to sit in for the foreseeable future as another search for Trebek’s permanent replacement gets back underway.

It’s unclear if Davies might be in line to permanently take over as EP of “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune,” but he’s based in New York, where he produces a wide variety of unscripted series like “Millionaire” and talk shows such as “Watch What Happens Live.” Embassy Row is also ramping up its stable of podcasts. Additionally, Davies is a soccer pundit through the “Men in Blazers” television show, podcast, and digital brand, which he co-hosts and runs with Roger Bennett.

The following was just sent to “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” staff from Prete:

I’m writing to let you know that Mike will no longer be serving as EP of Wheel and Jeopardy! effective immediately. We had hoped that when Mike stepped down from the host position at Jeopardy! it would have minimized the disruption and internal difficulties we have all experienced these last few weeks. That clearly has not happened.

Michael Davies from Embassy Row has agreed to help with production on an interim basis until further notice. Michael and I will work together with all of you in the weeks ahead to ensure that production remains on schedule and we do not miss a beat as we head into the new season.

I know this has been a challenging time for the entire team, and I want to thank you all for your cooperation and professionalism over these last few weeks. As Ravi mentioned last week, I will be more involved in the day-to-day on our shows moving forward and I am looking forward to working closely with all of you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything.

Sincerely,
Suzanne

Jennifer Lopez accidentally leaves price tag on Dolce & Gabbana cape - Page Six

Jennifer Lopez’s love may not cost a thing, but her cape sure comes with a price tag.

The multi-hyphenate, 52, attended Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Moda show in Venice on Sunday, where she suffered a slight wardrobe malfunction.

For the star-studded show, Lopez teamed an ornate floral cape with high-waisted trousers and a bra top, all by the Italian designers.

She accessorized with an embellished gold crown and heels, ensuring that her ensemble sparkled from top to toe.

However, when the wind billowed the star’s cape, it became clear that she’d forgotten to remove the price tag inside it.

While the cape — part of Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall 2019 runway collection — was likely on loan to Lopez for the show, eagle-eyed Twitter users still called out the fashion faux pas.

“Minnie Pearl is THAT you ???? LOL,” one tweeted, while another wrote, “I knew she was like the rest of us.”

Others defended the style snafu, adding, “Jlo and dress was [sic] very beautiful even though the price tag was there.”

Lopez isn’t the only star to suffer a similar slip-up, as Megan Markle left a price tag dangling from her dress in 2018.

Mike Richards Out As EP On ‘Jeopardy!’ & ‘Wheel Of Fortune’ - Deadline

Mike Richards is out as executive producer of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.

Sony Pictures Television just told staff. See the full note below.

It comes after a turbulent few weeks for the long-running syndicated program, which saw Richards, who joined Jeopardy! as exec producer in 2020, ousted as host after one day of production.

Suzanne Prete, EVP, Business and Strategy, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!, just sent an internal note to staff on these shows explaining that Richards would depart effective immediately with Embassy Row’s Michael Davies agreeing to help on an interim basis.

She said that they hoped that Richards exiting as host would have “minimized the disruption and internal difficulties” that they experienced over the last few weeks, but added that “clearly has not happened.”

Deadline understands that given all that has transpired over the last few weeks, it was clear that Richards’ position as EP has been too compromised for him to effectively continue in that role. It’s thought that given he doesn’t have the internal or external support that he needs to lead the team, his exit was in the best interests of the show.

Watch on Deadline

Richards stepped down as host earlier this month following a Ringer report about insensitive and sexist comments Richards had made towards his female co-hosts and guests on The Randumb Show, a podcast he hosted in 2013 and 2014, along with off-color remarks about Haitians and Jews.

Last week, the staff and crew of the venerable game show were summoned for a Microsoft Teams meeting this morning, sources told Deadline. Richards apologized to his staff for the comments and addressed his team during the meeting, which was attended by Sony’s top TV executive, Ravi Ahuja, Chairman of Sony Global Television Studios, who oversees the studio’s gameshow franchises and was in charge of the search for a permanent Jeopardy! host following the death of Alex Trebek. A similar virtual meeting was held with the staff of Sony’s Wheel of Fortune, which Richards also executive produces.

During this meeting, the studio confirmed that he would continue as executive producer. Yet, multiple Jeopardy! staffers who attended the meeting said that they had expected for him to step down as EP as the show is restarting the search for a permanent host.

Mayim Bialik, named earlier this month as host of the Jeopardy! primetime and spinoff series, will fill in as host of the mothership syndicated program for at least the next three weeks.

See the full note below:

Dear Team,

I’m writing to let you know that Mike will no longer be serving as EP of Wheel and Jeopardy! effective immediately.  We had hoped that when Mike stepped down from the host position at Jeopardy! it would have minimized the disruption and internal difficulties we have all experienced these last few weeks. Hong Kong Legend Tony Leung Tries His Hand at Hollywood - GQ Magazine

The icon of global cinema stars in an American film—and comes to the Marvel universe—for the first time.
Hong Kong Legend Tony Leung Tries His Hand at Hollywood
Jacket, $2,990, and shirt, $990, by Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello.

When they first met to discuss casting what would become the latest Marvel movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, producer Jonathan Schwartz asked the film’s director, Destin Daniel Cretton, who his dream choice was to play their villain. Wenwu, the estranged father of the film’s hero, was many things—a stylish underworld boss, an ancient Chinese warrior, and a high-powered modern man—so Cretton needed someone with range. Immediately, he thought of one of his favorite actors. “Tony Leung,” he said, “but he’ll never do it.” Schwartz replied, “Let’s try.”

The preeminent Hong Kong actor of his generation and one of international cinema’s greatest stars, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, now 59, moves with the smoldering, understated charm of an old-world matinee idol. His performances often make his films feel like their own genre, whether they’re kung fu sagas, police dramas, or film noir love stories. And over the past four decades, he’s been a muse to some of Asia’s greatest directors, among them Ang Lee, John Woo, Andy Lau, and his friend and frequent collaborator Wong Kar Wai. Wong’s films, in particular, set the tone for Leung’s career; the pencil mustache and debonair personality he cultivated for a role in the filmmaker’s surreal epic 2046 earned him a nickname that tried to translate his charm for Western audiences: Asia’s Clark Gable.

Leung had always wanted to make a Hollywood movie—he dreamed of working with Martin Scorsese, or starring in an adaptation of a Lawrence Block crime novel. But he’d never been presented with the right opportunity. American film has traditionally had little to offer any Asian leading man, and Leung didn’t think there would ever be a role in a big-budget American movie for a Cantonese-speaking Hong Kong Chinese actor of his stature.

Cretton, the first Asian-American filmmaker to direct a Marvel movie, brought a different approach. “If we are going after an actor like that,” he says, “the character needs to be worthy of that ask. So using Tony as our guiding light, before he even said yes, lit a fire under us to create a character that’s worthy of him entertaining the idea.”

How many superhero films cast their villains first? In doing so, Cretton hoped to solve a uniquely Asian-American problem with the source material. Marvel Comics had created the character Shang-Chi in the early ’70s as the son of a perhaps irredeemably stereotypical Asian villain: Fu Manchu. Half a century later, Marvel no longer had the rights to Fu Manchu and didn’t want them, either, meaning Cretton and his team needed an entirely new character.

Enter Wenwu, a father with an ancient criminal past now at the helm of a modern terrorist organization. As Leung recalls, when he first met with Cretton about the role, the director told him, “Although you’re not a superhero, your character has many layers.” Intrigued by the villain’s complexity and Cretton’s open, forthright style, Leung said yes, and then spent the two months before filming preparing for the part.

“Frankly, I couldn’t imagine someone in the real world with superpowers,” he says over Zoom one recent evening from his home in Hong Kong. “But I can imagine someone like him who is an underdog, who is a failure of a father.” At ease in a white T-shirt, a slender golden chain visible underneath, he has the ready and easy smile of a boy, a collection of elegant porcelain urns and vases arranged on a shelf behind him. He says he understood that Wenwu was ultimately driven not by evil but by a love for his children, which lent him a touch of humanity. “On the one hand,” Leung says, “he’s a bad father, but on the other, I just see him as someone who loves his family deeply.” And, he adds, “I don’t think he knows how to love himself.”

The story of Tony Leung’s life is very much like a Tony Leung movie. When he was seven years old, his father, the manager of a nightclub, left his mother for the third and final time. This was in late-’60s Hong Kong, a world where broken families were rare, and the abandonment made Leung into a private, reclusive person. “I didn’t know how to deal with people after my father left me,” he says. “When you’re a kid, everybody’s talking about their father, their family, how happy they are, how great their father is. I think from that time I stopped communicating with people. And I became very suppressed.”

That shame disappeared when he accompanied his mother to the movies, where the young Leung fell in love with the films of Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Gene Hackman. He grew particularly enamored of his mother’s favorite star, Alain Delon, a white-hot matinee idol from ’60s Paris with bold blue eyes that glowed like sapphires and a habit of smoking cigarettes with an almost erotic intimacy, as though they were keeping him alive.

But back then Leung never dreamed of becoming an actor. He was a 20-year-old appliance salesman when, in 1982, an acquaintance, the actor Stephen Chow, suggested he audition for Hong Kong’s famed Television Broadcasts Limited acting school. To his surprise, Leung was accepted, and for a year he trained six days a week in every discipline of acting, including kung fu, before being cast in his first television show. The work provided an outlet for a part of himself that he’d kept hidden, and he learned to direct his anger and fear into his characters. “I found a way to express myself,” he says, “to cry in front of others, to laugh, to let go of all my emotions without being shy.”

As a teenager, he would often talk to himself in front of a mirror but rarely to people, and he later channeled that method into his craft. In Wong Kar Wai’s 1994 film, Chungking Express, he plays a lovelorn cop who spends three minutes talking to a bar of soap, a giant stuffed Garfield the Cat, and a shirt he left on the floor. He talks to them like they’re friends he needs to cheer up, making jokes about their weight and cleanliness, and a few confessions of his own—a performance that left an indelible impression on Shang-Chi director Cretton.

Wong and Leung would go on to make a total of seven films together, including The Grandmaster, in which Leung stars as Bruce Lee’s legendary martial arts trainer, Ip Man, and 2046, a surreal picture with no script and a production that lasted for four years. But it was Wong’s 2000 film, In the Mood for Love, that introduced Leung to a worldwide audience, and won him a best actor award at Cannes. Leung plays a writer whose wife travels a great deal, and who begins spending time with his neighbor, played by Maggie Cheung, whose husband also travels a great deal; as they put together that their spouses are having an affair, they also fall in love, to their mutual chagrin. The film is a masterpiece of tone, as is Leung’s performance—his ability to sit in front of the camera alone and move from desolation to lust to tenderness to quiet fury, just with his eyes, in a single scene, is mesmerizing.

Leung took a rare turn as a villain in Ang Lee’s 2007 World War II–era drama, Lust, Caution, in which he played a Chinese government official in Japanese-occupied Shanghai who embarks on a wild affair with a would-be assassin. After seeing the film, Leung found he’d surprised himself. He didn’t know where the character had come from. For him, the performance represented a kind of ideal—finding some part of himself he’d never found before, as if he were an explorer in an unknown world.

Leung is intensely private in ways that seem unusual in 2021. His wife, Carina Lau, is very active on social media, but he’s almost never visible there. Her Instagram post for his 58th birthday shows him skateboarding alone in an empty lot, which captures his essence perfectly. Partners since the late ’80s, they married in 2008, at a ceremony Wong Kar Wai organized for them in Bhutan. Over the course of their relationship, they’ve appeared in many films together, most recently in 2046, and Leung appreciates having a spouse who can act alongside him and who understands the intensity of his craft while also doing it herself.

Leung and Lau have, thus far, no children, and Leung has rarely played a father onscreen. “Someone actually approached me to play the role of a failed father,” Leung says, “but I rejected it because I don’t want to be reminded of how my dad treated me.”

He recounts happy memories of being alone in Tokyo or Hokkaido, checking into a hotel with a novel, riding a bicycle for hours, going alone to art galleries and museums, and dining by himself at izakayas afterward, drinking sake and eating internal organs—liver, intestine, and ox tongue, which he remembers as a favorite of his father’s. For exercise, he has a stuntman’s preference for extreme sports: skiing, snowboarding, surfing. But he’s quick to characterize these as hobbies he pursues for their solitary nature. “Maybe it’s because of my childhood background, which made me distance myself from people,” he says. “Since then, I’ve learned to find something that I really enjoy doing whilst I’m alone. Because you cannot always rely on being with people to feel happy, right?”

On Leung’s first day on the set of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, in Sydney, he emerged from his trailer, dressed and ready, and asked to have his chair put near the camera. Every day he repeated this process. “He would never be on his phone,” says Cretton. “He would just come and sit all day, watching everything that we’re doing—what shot we’re setting up, what we’re doing with the stand-ins. And by the time it was ready to go, I’d literally have nothing to tell him. Initially, I’d be like, ‘Okay, here’s what we’re thinking,’ and he’d say, ‘Oh,’ very politely, ‘yeah, I know. I’ve been watching this whole time.’ ”

When it came time for Leung to shoot a scene (which has since been cut), Cretton says a reverent quiet descended across the set. It was a hot day, and for Leung it was even hotter; he was attired in the long robes and wig required to play Wenwu as a young thief, stealing cattle, in what becomes a massive battle scene. Immediately after the first cut, Cretton looked to Schwartz, the producer, and said, “I don’t even know what to go tell him, because we don’t have to do another take. There’s really no reason to.”

Simu Liu, the 32-year-old Chinese-Canadian actor who plays Shang-Chi, is irrepressible when speaking of Leung’s stature, likening him to “Leonardo DiCaprio, Marlon Brando, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, all rolled up into one.” Sometimes he could hardly believe they were acting in the same film. “One day you’re on a network comedy show that’s doing really well, and then another day you’re in Australia with one of your childhood heroes, Tony Leung, somebody you grew up watching and idolizing.”

What struck Liu most was Leung’s unassuming manner. “If you met him and you didn’t know him, which of course is very difficult if you live in Asia, you’d think he was just like anybody on the street. He was so kind and radiated this Asian dad energy that I’m very familiar with and very drawn to.”

Yet sharing scenes with Leung, Liu soon found himself in a confrontation he hadn’t quite imagined, with those incredible eyes he’d grown up watching. “He’s able to convey so much with a single look,” Liu says. “It’s one thing to see that captured onscreen; it’s another to have those eyes across from you, piercing through to the depths of your soul.”

In between takes, Liu would listen as Leung shared stories of his formative TVB days, pointing out the differences between the elaborate pains with stunt safety Marvel took with harnesses and special effects and his old days in Hong Kong action films, doing stunts on wires so thin they seemed they might snap.

Leung is both moved and amused by what his arrival in Hollywood already means to his fans back home in Hong Kong. “Since my career began in TV shows in the ’80s,” he says, “a lot of my fans are moms and dads or grandmas, grandpas, and a lot of those people treat me as their own son. It’s like, ‘Oh, you went to study overseas and to a very famous college. Good for you. I’m really happy for you. I’m proud of you.’ ”

Leung, for his part, finds himself gravitating toward playing more villains. I ask if it is possibly the beginning of a new period for him, and he simply says, “Yes.” After a long career, it’s an unexplored terrain, full of challenges that can still scare him. “They usually have a more complex character and motivations,” he says. “It’s hard to experience one in real life, because usually there are consequences. But in movies, you get to explore the story without consequences.”

Candyman: Horror reboot director Nia DaCosta makes US box office history - BBC News

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in Candyman
Universal/MGM

Candyman director Nia DaCosta has made history by becoming the first black woman to have a film open at number one on the North American box office chart.

The director's reimagining of the 1992 horror made $22m (£16m) in its first weekend in US and Canadian cinemas.

That is almost as much as the film - co-written and produced by Get Out's Jordan Peele - actually cost to make.

Based on a Clive Barker story, the film is named after a hook-handed killer who has spawned a fearsome urban legend.

The new film stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a visual artist who comes to regret basing an exhibit on the Candyman myth.

DaCosta only had one feature credit, 2018's Little Woods, when she was invited to direct the latest instalment in the horror franchise.

The 31-year-old is currently working on The Marvels, the sequel to the 2019 Marvel comic book blockbuster Captain Marvel.

Candyman is the latest horror release to perform strongly in US cinemas as the sector recovers from the impact of the Covid pandemic.

A Quiet Place Part II was another scary success story, having made more than half of its $296m (£215m) worldwide haul from North American audiences.

Box office analysts said Candyman surpassed their expectations for an R-rated film opening in the Covid-19 era.

It performed better than had been expected even with Hurricane Ida depressing attendance in some southern US states.

Candyman also bucked a recent trend by launching only in cinemas, without a simultaneous release on streaming sites.

Films that have adopted a dual-release strategy, such as Black Widow and The Suicide Squad, have seen takings decline steeply in their second weekend in cinemas.

Candyman's success came at the expense of action comedy Free Guy, which slipped to second place with weekend takings of $13.6m (£9.8m).

Canine cartoon Paw Patrol: The Movie also dropped down a place, making $6.6m(£4.8m) in its second weekend in North American picture houses.
