2023 WWE Elimination Chamber results, recap, grades: Roman Reigns staves off tough challenge from Sami Zayn - CBS Sports

On Saturday night in Montreal, Sami Zayn almost gave his hometown Montreal fans the victory they desperately wanted. Instead, Zayn came up short in his bid to win the undisputed WWE universal championship from Roman Reigns in the main event of the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view.

For more than 30 minutes, Zayn gave Reigns all he could handle, scoring several near-falls and pushing the champion to his limit. But after multiple referees were knocked out and Jimmy Uso interfered on behalf of Reigns, Zayn finally fell short, though he did get a measure of post-match revenge with the help of Kevin Owens.

Also on the show, Austin Theory managed to retain his United States championship after a wild Elimination Chamber match thanks to interference from Logan Paul. And on the women's side, Asuka punched her ticket to a WrestleMania match with Raw women's champion Bianca Belair by outlasting five other women in the Chamber.

CBS Sports was with you the whole way through the event, providing updates and highlights as the action went down in the live blog below.

2023 WWE Elimination Chamber results, grades

Women's Elimination Chamber Match – Asuka vs. Carmella vs. Raquel Rodriguez vs. Nikki Cross vs. Natalya vs. Liv Morgan: Morgan and Natalya were the two women who started off the match. It took little time for them to head to the area between the ring and Chamber, with both women using the chains and pods to their advantage. Rodriguez was the first woman to enter from one of the pods, quickly taking over the match with her size and strength. No one had been eliminated by the time Cross became the fourth woman in the match. After the expected hot run upon entry, Cross climbed to the top of Carmella's pod before hitting a crossbody onto the other three women in the match. Asuka was the last woman left in a pod after Carmella entered the match before quickly putting herself back in the pod only to have to run as Rodridugez drove Cross through the plexiglass, a move that allowed Rodriguez to pin Cross for the first elimination of the match.

Upon entering the match, Asuka immediately went after Carmella, battering her with strikes. Amid the ensuing chaos, Natalya was able to lock Morgan in a sharpshooter before Asuka joined in, locking Morgan in an armbar until Morgan passed out and was eliminated. The next elimination quickly followed as Natalya locked Asuka in the sharpshooter but was hit by a Carmella superkick, allowing Carmella to score the pin and leaving the match down to Asuka, Carmella and Rodriguez. Asuka and Carmella quickly worked together to hit Rodriguez with a series of kicks before simultaneously pinning her for the elimination. A brief one-on-one session followed before Asuka locked up the armbar for the victory, punching her ticket to a match with Bianca Belair at WrestleMania. A solid, if unspectacular, entrant into Elimination Chamber history with the most obvious woman getting the victory. Asuka def. Carmella, Raquel Rodriguez, Natalya, Liv Morgan and Nikki Cross to win the Elimination Chamber. Grade: B-

Brock Lesnar vs. Bobby Lashley: Lesnar got off to a fast start, going right at Lashley before dumping him from the ring. Lashley quickly turned things around by hitting a spear when they returned to the ring and then tried to put Lesnar in the Hurt Lock. Lesnar countered the submission and hoisted Lashley onto his shoulders for the first F-5 of the match. Lesnar would hit a second F-5 and go for a third, but Lashley escaped and hit his second spear of the match. Lashley was able to lock in the Hurt Lock on his second attempt. Lesnar struggled to escape the hold but could not and resorted to a low blow with a mule kick, leading the referee to immediately call for a disqualification. After the match, Lesnar hit the ref with an F-5 before delivering another to Lashley. Lesnar took the fight to the outside and hit Lashley with an F-5 through the announce table before also dragging the referee outside for another F-5. Not satisfying in any way but this was likely the means to an end to get to a no-disqualification rematch at WrestleMania. Bobby Lashley def. Brock Lesnar via disqualification. Grade: C-

Edge & Beth Phoenix vs. Finn Balor & Rhea Ripley: Edge got going quick on Balor before tagging in Phoenix for a double-team. Ripley and Phoenix traded words, and then clotheslines with neither woman going down. Ripley looked for Riptide after taking over but Phoenix managed to escape before finally dropping Ripley with a clothesline. Dominik Mysterio tried to distract Phoenix, leading Phoenix to chase him before turning her attention to Ripley, driving her into the ring steps. Mysterio again interfered, crouching Phoenix on the top rope before being chased off by Edge. Momentum continued to swing, with Mysterio returning to ringside only to see Ripley hit with a superplex. Edge and Phoenix both locked in submissions but Mysterio tossed brass knuckles in to the ring for Ripley for the save. Phoenix attempted to hit Phoenix with a Con-chair-to using the ring steps, but Phoenix escaped to hit a Glam Slam outside the ring. Back in the ring, Phoenix and Edge hit Balor with a Shatter Machine to score the win. An odd choice to have Ripley take a loss to a bulletproof pair of legends in her first match since winning the Royal Rumble. The match was well put-together to hide Phoenix's shortcomings due to age and general ring rust and it did make the Montreal crowd happy. Edge & Beth Phoenix def. Finn Balor & Rhea Ripley via pinfall. Grade: B

Men's Elimination Chamber Match for the United States Championship -- Austin Theory (c) vs. Montez Ford vs. Bronson Reed vs. Johnny Gargano vs. Damian Priest vs. Seth Rollins: Gargano and Rollins were the two men to start the match, quickly engaging in some chain wrestling. Theory was the first man out of his pod, attacking both Rollins and Gargano and sending Gargano into the pod. Gargano and Rollins eventually turned it around, teaming up to bounce Theory around the ring before shutting themselves in a pod with the champion to rain down punches. With no eliminations yet, Priest was the next man into the match, quickly taking down Rollins and Gargano with a series of big moves. Reed was the next man in, leaving Ford to wait for his chance to join the match as the final entrant.

Reed put both Rollins and Gargano on his shoulders before hitting a double Samoan drop for a near-fall on Rollins. Reed continued to run wild on everyone in the match until Ford was able to enter and quickly hit Reed with a big punch and kick. Ford tried to hit Theory with a People's Elbow but Reed interrupted. Rollins and Gargano nearly eliminated Reed with an assisted poisonrana, but Reed was able to kick out, preventing the first elimination of the match. Ford then climbed the side of the chamber, hung from the top and dropped onto the rest of the field. Reed was finally eliminated when Gargano hit a Final Beat, Rollins hit a stomp and Ford finished things off with a frog splash.

Rollins attempted to power bomb Gargano off the top of a pod, but Gargano reversed into a rana that sent both men flying onto the other three remaining competitors. Back in the ring, Priest managed to finish off Gargano with a Razor's Edge, taking the remaining competitors down to four. Priest would follow Gargano out the door moments later when Rollins and Ford combined on a blockbuster/powerbomb combo to eliminate the big man. Rollins hit Ford with a stomp onto the platform outside the ring, allowing Theory to steal the pinfall to leave Rollins as the last challenger remaining. Ford remained down after being eliminated, bringing several referees and officials to the ring and leaving the door to the Chamber open and allowing Logan Paul to run in, hit Rollins with a Buckshot Lariat and a stomp before Theory to hit A-Town Down to retain his title. This was a solid Elimination Chamber match that helped to raise the stock of entrants who needed it and provided plenty of memorable high spots. Paul's interference won't satisfy many but it's building to a very obvious WrestleMania match. Austin Theory def. Montez Ford, Bronson Reed, Johnny Gargano, Damian Priest and Seth Rollins to retain the United States championship. Grade: A-

Undisputed WWE Universal Championship -- Roman Reigns (c) vs. Sami Zayn: The pair milked the rabid crowd's support for Zayn for several minutes before finally making contact. After Reigns took Zayn down, Zayn locked in a headlock until he was shoved off and hit with an elbow. Zayn came right back by throwing Reigns over the top rope before hitting a big dive onto the champion. Reigns took back over with a right-hand counter before dumping Zayn from the ring. Reigns continued to taunt the crowd, as well as Zayn's wife, eventually bringing the fight directly in front of her and telling her that the whole situation was Zayn's fault.

Zayn eventually stormed back, hitting Reigns with punches and a clothesline that put the champion over the top rope and to the outside. Zayn scored his first true near-fall with a sunset flip powerbomb as Reigns stood on the middle rope. Zayn countered Reigns' first Superman punch attempt with an exploder into the turnbuckles but ate the punch moments later for a Reigns near-fall. Reigns missed a spear, hitting the corner before another exploder into the turnbuckles. Zayn followed up with his own Superman punch and a Helluva kick for a tremendous false finish, with Reigns kicking out at the last possible fraction of a second.

Outside the ring, Reigns missed another spear, crashing through the barricade before Zayn brought him back into the ring to hit a blue thunder powerbomb for another two-count. As Zayn went for another blue thunder bomb, Reigns defended by smashing Zayn into the referee. Seconds later, Zayn hit another Helluva kick and had a clear victory but with no referee to count. This, of course, brought out Jimmy Uso to hit three superkicks and a splash before dragging Reigns onto Zayn. Still, Zayn managed to kick out before the count of three when a new official ran to the ring. Zayn threw Reigns from the ring and hit Jimmy with a Helluva kick before turning around into a Reigns spear for another near-fall. Zayn ducked out of the way of another Superman punch, this time with Reigns knocking out the second official before Zayn hit another Superman punch of his own. Paul Heyman dug a chair out from under the ring and handed it to Reigns, but Jey Uso entered the ring and stood between Reigns and Zayn. Reigns told Jey that he had to choose between his cousin or his friend before handing the chair over. Jey refused to move before Reigns took the chair and moved out of the way of a Zayn spear, leading Zayn to take out Jey. Reigns then hit Zayn with the chair several times before hitting a spear and covering until one of the previous referees slid into the ring to count the fall. After the match, Jimmy Uso and Reigns continued to attack Zayn until Kevin Owens' music hit and he took out Jimmy and hit both Bloodline members with a stunner before putting Jimmy through a table with a pop-up powerbomb. Heyman attempted to attack Owens after Owens grabbed a chair, but Owens quickly took him out. Owens then moved out of the way to allow Zayn to hit Reigns with one final Helluva kick. A hot crowd always makes a wrestling match better and Montreal was positively on fire. The ending won't satisfy everyone and it took a lot of classic "convenient referee availability" moments -- and Owens not bothering to intervene until after the match -- to get there. But the match was given time and Zayn was positioned as a legitimate threat. Very good stuff all around. Roman Reigns def. Sami Zayn via pinfall to retain the title. Grade: A

CNN  —

Allison Holker, the widow of late professional dancer and producer Stephen “tWitch” Boss, shared a message of gratitude on Saturday in her first video appearance on social media since his death.

Boss, the DJ for “Ellen DeGeneres Show” and dancer who rose to fame on “So You Think You Can Dance,” died by suicide in December. He was 40.

“I just want to say thank you for all the love and support that you guys have sent to me and my family at this time. It has been very challenging and emotional,” Holker, a professional dancer and television host, said in a video shared on Instagram.

“But you guys have brought so much hope and inspiration to us by sharing stories and memories and moments and different ways that Stephen impacted your life.”

Boss and Holker shared three children who often danced with them in family videos posted on social media. The pair met as all-star dancers on Season 7 of “So You Think You Can Dance” in 2010. Boss later went on to become a DJ and producer on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

“He was someone that was just beautiful and he lived his life from love and he made you feel a certain way,” Holker said. “My family and I always said that we wanted to make sure that our purpose was lived out by bringing joy to people, joy to people’s homes from dance or love.”

“That’s not going to change for us. It’s going to feel a little bit different, but we know that that’s our purpose and we’ll still do that,” she added.

Holker concluded her video with a request to honor her husband’s memory by choosing kindness.

“I hope that we can remember the feeling he gave us and remember that we can still move from there, we can still move and choose love and we can still choose grace and we can still choose kindness,” she said.

Paul Wesley officially files for divorce from Ines de Ramon - Page Six

It’s officially over between Paul Wesley and Ines de Ramon — despite both of them already moving on.

The “Vampire Diaries” star filed for divorce from his estranged wife on Friday after five years of marriage, according to documents obtained by Us Weekly.

Wesley, 40, cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split but noted the division of their assets will be decided later on.

The former couple, who started dating in 2018, announced their separation in September 2022 — but actually called it quits five months prior.

However, neither Wesley nor the jewelry dealer, 30, seem too heartbroken.

Wesley was first linked to model Natalie Kuckenburg in August 2022 after they were photographed holding hands in New York City.

Things seem to be going strong for the “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” star and Kuckenburg, who is 18 years his junior, as they even spent the holidays together this year.

Prior to his relationships with Kuckenburg and de Ramon, Wesley was previously married to “Vampire Diaries” co-star Torrey DeVitto from 2011 to 2013.

Meanwhile, de Ramon has been dating Brad Pitt since November and the pair have been making the most of their long-distance relationship.

In fact, the A-list actor made sure de Ramon’s Valentine’s Day was one to remember.

The 59-year-old sent a bouquet of pink peonies and a baguette to his leading lady at her office in Los Angeles on Tuesday — despite being across the country to film in New York.

Similarly to her soon-to-be ex-husband, de Ramon also spent the holidays with her new flame.

Pitt and de Ramon enjoyed a relaxing — and very scantily clad — New Year’s Eve day while lounging by the pool in Cabo.

The couple left little to the imagination while sunbathing, with Pitt showing off his chiseled physique in swim trunks and the jewelry executive deciding to forgo her bikini top altogether.

Kyle Jacobs, songwriter and husband of singer Kellie Pickler, dead at 49 - CNN

Editor’s Note: If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts or mental health matters, please call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline to connect with a trained counselor or visit the Lifeline site.

CNN  —

Kyle Jacobs, a country music producer and songwriter, who co-starred with his wife, singer Kellie Pickler, in a CMT docuseries, has died, according to Nashville police. He was 49.

Jacobs died by an apparent suicide in their Nashville home on Friday, according to authorities.

CNN has reached out to representatives for Pickler for comment.

According to Nashville’s Department of Emergency Communications, a 911 call was received at 1:21 pm local time on Friday. Officers and Nashville Fire Department personnel responded to the home of Pickler and Jacobs, located on Sneed Road.

Pickler told police that she awoke a short time earlier, did not see her husband and began looking for him, a police statement said. After she and a personal assistant were unable to open the door to the upstairs bedroom/office, the assistant called authorities, the statement added.

How to get help

Jacobs, a music producer, has worked with artists including Garth Brooks, Kelly Clarkson, Darius Rucker and Tim McGraw. He won an Academy of Country Music Award in 2014 for his work as a producer on Lee Brice’s “I Drive Your Truck.”

Jacobs often shared updates on his musical collaborations on Instagram.

“One of my favorite things to do as a songwriter is writing songs with beautiful hearts in beautiful places,” he wrote in a 2021 post.

Pickler is best known for her participation on Season 5 “American Idol,” which helped launch her career as a musician and television personality.

Jacobs starred alongside Pickler in the docu-comedy series “I Love Kellie Pickler,” which debuted in 2015 and proved to be a ratings hit for CMT. It ran for three seasons.

In a statement posted to the official Twitter account for CMT, the network said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Kellie Pickler and the rest of the Jacobs family.”

In a 2015 interview about their reality show, Jacobs said he was more accustomed to being behind-the-scenes instead of on camera but that he felt at ease collaborating with his wife on the project.

“I’m just going to be me and be with my wife and just be us,” Jacobs said.

He added: “We’ve just built such a foundation of trust and love…Whatever work is, if it ever gets in the way of our marriage then it gets in the way. Our marriage comes first.”

CNN’s Paradise Afshar contributed to this report.

Sean Penn Grills Zelenskyy, Braves Fox News and Enrolls Miles Teller to Rally Ukrainian Soldiers in Gonzo Documentary ‘Superpower’ - Variety

On the day that Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, Sean Penn and a gonzo documentary camera crew found themselves on the frontlines of war as they waited to see if they could interview Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Not only did he land that interview, but he continued to travel back to Ukraine to chronicle the horrors of war a total of six times for “Superpower,” a documentary Penn co-directed that premiered to a standing ovation at the Berlin Film Festival on Friday.

In the nearly two-hour-long film, produced by Vice, Penn underlines America’s shortcomings in supporting Ukraine in the war. Zelenskyy, who grows increasingly comfortable around the Oscar-winning actor in a series of interviews, reveals his frustrations at the lack of support in the form of high-impact weapons received from the Biden administration.

In a post-screening Q&A, Penn echoed Zelenskyy’s concerns. “It’s not so much about what if Ukraine loses, because they won’t, but…if Russia wins, we are all fucked. Just dead-set fucked,” Penn told the crowd. “As Americans, I can say we’re going to have to take on board a level of shame for not having scaled up sooner with the weapons.”

Penn explains early on in the film how he felt like a disbelieving “Polyanna” ahead of the outbreak of war. Footage shot before Russia’s invasion shows the actor kiboshing any suggestion of Russia invading the country.

In the film, Penn forges a deep bond to Zelenskyy — once an actor himself — as the Ukrainian president jokes about wanting to visit Santa Monica once his nation emerges victorious. Cameras follow Penn as he tries to escape the region and, perhaps just as scary, enters the corridors of Fox News to face off against Sean Hannity. In one scene filmed last summer, Penn even takes a group of Ukrainian soldiers to a movie theater to watch “Top Gun: Maverick” and gets his buddy Miles Teller on FaceTime to chat with them after the credits roll.

“Superpower,” which screened at Verti Music Hall, is one of the biggest world premieres secured this year by Berlin artistic director Carlo Chatrian, who has been under pressure to include more mainstream titles after a lackluster 2022 festival.

The premiere came a day after Penn made a surprise appearance at Berlin’s opening ceremony on Thursday, revealing that he’d come directly from Kyiv, where Penn first screened the film to Zelenskyy before bringing it to Berlin. At the ceremony, Zelenskyy also appeared via satellite to greet festival-goers and encourage them not to lose faith in Ukrainians fighting for freedom.

“Superpower” was not conceived as a war story. Rather, Penn and co-director Aaron Kaufman, and producer Billy Smith, set out to chart the trajectory of Zelenskyy’s career, from an actor-comedian-producer playing a history teacher elected as Ukraine’s president in the satirical TV series “Servant of the People,” to a rising political star elected as the real-life president of Ukraine in 2019.

However, following the outbreak of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the project had to pivot in order to become more of a profile of a modern warn hero. And a portrait of Penn as a chain-smoking, truth-seeking vigilante.

‘Star Trek: Picard,’ Season 3, Episode 1: Reunion Engage - The New York Times

The new season of “Picard” reunites the admiral with his old crewmates, something fans have been hoping for since the series began.

[Takes deep breaths]

I’m being told it is against the Times stylebook for me to yell out a scream of anticipation for this season of “Picard,” which is essentially a catch up with the “Next Generation” cast.

So I guess I’ll just write instead.

This is easily the most anticipated offering of the new era of “Trek” since, well, the first season of “Picard,” which many fans were hoping would be exactly what the third season is billing itself to be — a reunion of the old show.

But before we get to all that, some housekeeping.

The last time we saw the crew of the Enterprise all together was in “Star Trek: Nemesis” in 2002, one of the more critically reviled offerings of the “Star Trek” franchise, in part because it needlessly killed off the beloved Data. (It wasn’t disliked only by audiences: Several of the main cast members weren’t fans either, as they told me in our group interview earlier this month.) When “Picard” arrived 18 years later, we learned that our favorite captain had become a retired admiral withering away at his vineyard. Riker and Troi were also mostly retired after serving on the U.S.S. Titan, and Data was killed off again, but this time next to a classy fireplace.

The first two seasons of “Picard” have followed a similar trajectory. They’ve started off strong and tailed off as the season went on, leaning heavily into nostalgia as the basis for ambitious plot lines. That would be fine, except the writers have often opted for short-term payoffs rather than long-term storytelling.

That nostalgia has sometimes led to some odd choices — such as Picard not being human anymore after becoming an android in Season 1. The show has also sometimes seemed to forget who the characters are, as with last season’s use of Young Guinan.

So my excitement about another offering of the “Next Generation” cast is mixed with trepidation.

As expected, the season premiere is promising. It’s the 25th century (the onscreen text here is an homage to “Wrath of Khan”). The opening scene includes a large dose of fan service, such as audio of a captain’s log from way back when Picard encountered the Borg for the first time and a plaque referencing Cor Caroli V, a planet where a third season “Next Generation” episode takes place.

But the scene doesn’t feature our old friend Jean-Luc but rather our other old friend, Dr. Beverly Crusher. She appears to be on the run from some shady looking aliens. Beverly has developed skills with a phaser, which is contrary to what we saw in her younger days, as Riker points out later. She’s vaporizing enemies now! (Who says you can’t pick up new hobbies as you get older?) And she sends a message to her old captain and sort of crush, Jean-Luc, to say that she needs him — but she does so through his old comm badge using a secret code.

Gates McFadden in “Star Trek: Picard.”Trae Patton/Paramount+

The fact that “Picard” gives Beverly something to do other than stand around and scan things was a big reason Gates McFadden came back to reprise the role, and it’s a welcome sight.

Meanwhile, Jean-Luc finally, after all these decades, seems content in retirement. He is in love with Laris. He might write a book. He’s ready to move to Chaltok IV, a Romulan planet, where he’ll sip Saurian brandy and wind down his life. He’s earned it. But again, he’s an android now, so he can’t die. Not really. Can he even taste brandy? See where the long-term plot issues are? (Fun reference here: Picard holding the flute from the classic “Next Generation” episode “Inner Light.”)

But Beverly needs saving. She sends Jean-Luc a coded message telling him to trust nobody. For some reason, Jean-Luc tells Laris, Beverly hasn’t spoken to members of the Enterprise crew for 20 years. (This would mean that shortly after the events of “Nemesis,” Crusher cut off her closest friends. Excited to find out why!) Props to Laris — a Romulan intelligence operative — for being totally chill with one of Jean-Luc’s exes reaching out for a secret rendezvous. True love.

Riker and Picard meet up at Guinan’s bar during Frontier Day celebrations, where Picard tells Riker about the secret message.

“I wouldn’t have asked to meet you like this if it hadn’t been very important,” Jean-Luc tells his old first officer. (At a crowded bar? Where people could easily eavesdrop? Of course, moments later, we see someone doing exactly that.)

Jonathan Frakes and Patrick Stewart have instant chemistry, borne of decades of working together. But Riker suggests to Picard that he is on the outs with his wife, Troi — another member of the old crew. (This raises a question: Troi and Crusher were close friends on the Enterprise, why wouldn’t Jean-Luc want to tell her too? Why just Riker?)

Riker instantly agrees on a scheme to hit the road to the Ryton system, like Jake and Elroy. That’s what bros do, after all. They hatch a scheme to commander the sleek looking U.S.S. Titan, Riker’s old command. Another nice traditional “Trek” moment: glamour shots of the exterior. (I hate to be that guy, but Beverly’s message specifically said not to involve Starfleet. So why would Riker and Picard center their plan on using a Starfleet ship? Surely, they can find another deep space charter. OK, I admit it: I don’t hate being that guy.)

The Titan is commanded by Captain Shaw, played by the charming Todd Stashwick. He is a magnetic presence, but Shaw’s previous post appears have been on the U.S.S. Jerkface, because he is, without explanation, rude and dismissive of two legendary Starfleet officers. He doesn’t even greet them when they arrive, instead sending Seven of Nine — er, Commander Annika Hansen. Shaw also isn’t on the bridge to greet visitors for what is apparently an inspection or giving orders when the ship leaves spacedock. (Picard gives the order to Seven to take out the ship. Why isn’t Shaw doing that?) Almost every single sentence uttered by Shaw is dripping with condescending rudeness.

“Captain Shaw prefers I use Hansen,” Seven tells Jean-Luc. Since when does a Starfleet captain in the 25th century get to decide what your name is? (We’re going to use Seven for now, since that’s what she’s known as mostly throughout the “Trek” universe.)

It’s a strange dynamic and here’s the problem: Shaw is painted as the unlikable villain of the episode. Seven even says that Shaw’s behavior is making her reconsider joining Starfleet. But Shaw’s stance is absolutely correct. When Riker says he wants to unexpectedly divert the ship to the Ryton system, Shaw says, “That’s at the edge of Federation space at the opposite direction of our intended course — twice the time.”

He’s been given no heads up on this mission. Jean-Luc may be an admiral, but he is retired. Riker doesn’t even outrank Shaw. Why would he follow this clearly suspicious order that comes out of nowhere with no real explanation other than bragging rights? Picard makes it all the more weird when he says they’ll end up at Deep Space 4, which, as Shaw notes, has been shut down. (Picard should know better. In the “Next Generation” episode “The Pegasus,” Picard defies an admiral who tries to take command of the Enterprise.) As far as Seven goes, seen through another lens, Shaw trusting her to take the ship out of spacedock without him needing to be there is an example of him having faith in her.

Seven quickly breaks Shaw’s faith by sending the ship to the Ryton section anyway. This area of space is outside the Federation’s jurisdiction and far away from Earth, so it must have taken a long time to get there, even at maximum warp. Is Shaw such a detached captain that he doesn’t notice when his ship goes in the opposite direction? Especially given his fondness for rules and regulations? Despite Shaw’s personality flaws, all his actions showed me in this episode is that he’s a competent Starfleet captain who can see through blatant lies.

The episode ends with intrigue on Beverly’s ship when Riker and Picard meet — dun, dun, dun — her son. (There is an explicit reference that Picard and Crusher actually were lovers, when Picard says that he made her a mixtape.)

All in all, a fun episode. Seeing Riker and Jean-Luc interact like the old friends that they are went down easy like a glass of Chateau Picard. My excitement — and my trepidation — remains high.
