'Saturday Night Live' mulls outcome of Derek Chauvin trial | TheHill - The Hill

"Saturday Night Live" used the cold open of its latest show to mull the outcome of the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer accused of killing George Floyd.

"Sounds like we all agree there's no way Derek Chauvin walks away from this," comedian Kate McKinnon says while  spoofing a local news anchor during a discussion about the trial.

"Hmmmm ... well ...," co-stars Keenan Thompson and Ego Nwodim respond, expressing doubt.

Chauvin's defense lawyers have argued that Floyd's drug use led to his death last year, which was caught on video that shows Chauvin kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes during an arrest outside a connivence store.

"And there's no way the jury is gonna fall for that," McKinnon says, confidently.

"I'm not saying that," Thompson responds, sparking laughter from the studio audience.

"Let's just say we've seen this movie before," Nwodim says.

McKinnon's character says she agrees, adding that "historically, police officers have gotten away" in other cases like Chauvin's.

"Historically?" Thompson asks.

"She means every single time," Nwodim responds.

The Chauvin trial is expected to last several more days before a highly anticipated verdict later this month.
