IFC Films Buys Modern Romantic Comedy ‘Dating & New York’ Ahead of Tribeca Premiere (EXCLUSIVE) - Variety

IFC Films has acquired rights to the millennial romantic comedy “Dating & New York” ahead of its premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

The movie, written and directed by Jonah Feingold in his feature filmmaking debut, stars Jaboukie Young-White and Francesca Reale.

IFC Films plans to release “Dating & New York” in theaters and on digital platforms in September. At Tribeca, the movie will have its world premiere on Sunday, June 13.

A fairytale with a uniquely modern twist, “Dating & New York” follows single 20somethings Milo (Young-White) and Wendy (Reale), who meet on a dating app. Rather than ghosting each other or settling into a relationship, the two draft an ironclad friends-with-benefits contract that will test the resolve of their otherwise seemingly perfect dynamic. For Wendy and Milo, their fate is decided when one of them catches real feelings, and they must figure out how to remain friends, knowing they love one another, or decide to never text each other again.

“Those wishing stars in storybooks I grew up reading might actually work… It’s a dream come true to partner with IFC,” Feingold said in a statement. “They immediately blew us away with their vision and sincere passion towards our fairy-tale feel-good romantic comedy about modern romance in a time when it couldn’t be more complicated. Our cast and crew had a blast making this film, and we’re so excited to be in the IFC family.”

Young-White is a comedian best known for appearances on “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah.” Reale was featured in Season 3 of the Netflix hit “Stranger Things” and the indie comedy “Yes, God, Yes.” The cast of “Dating & New York” also includes Catherine Cohen and “Entourage’s” Jerry Ferrara, with cameos from Arturo Castro of “Broad City” fame and “Saturday Night Live” cast member Alex Moffat.

“Jonah’s take on dating in the app age is both incredibly funny and refreshingly optimistic, with shades of Nora Ephron and classic romantic comedies,” IFC Films president Arianna Bocco said in a statement. “It’s also an amazing showcase for so many young comedians, especially Jaboukie Young-White, and a perfect New York City film to launch at the Tribeca Film Festival. We’re so pleased to be partnering with Jonah for his debut feature.”

The film is produced by Joaquin Acrich and co-produced by Katie Schiller, Kieran Altmann (“Shiva Baby”) and Brian Muller (“Bridge and Tunnel”). Ferrara served as an executive producer with Spencer Barkoff, Tracy Kopulsky, Matthew Lev, Mason Novick, Reale, Craig Swidler, Sam Weinstein and Young-White.

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ director of acquisitions Aijah Keith and acquisitions coordinator Adam Koehler with UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers.
